Dive Back to School with Clean Ocean Action
By Lori Draz
In addition to Clean Ocean Action’s (COA) tireless monitoring of the ocean and waterways and their advocacy efforts, members also offer an assortment of educational resources and programs for aspiring ocean advocates.
Part of COA’s mission is educating people of all ages to be stewards of the environment. To ensure an eco-fun end to summer and return to school, COA encourages you to dive into these educational resources and upcoming opportunities.
Everyone should get their own Waterway Mindfulness Toolkit under the Rally the Rivers tab at CleanOceanAction.org. The educational resources in this toolkit will instill “waterway mindfulness” in residents of all ages throughout the Two Rivers Watershed. It also includes COA’s new educational videos, titled “Shark Tooth Tales,” “Horseshoe Crabs – A Living Fossil” and “Shifting Coastlines,” plus other eco-fun resources.
Here’s a tip: get your collection of COA’s Educational Tip Cards that you can browse through for ways to green your scene. There are 16 different selections available. You’ll find Tips for Kids, Tips for Dog Owners, Tips for Cat Owners, Tips for Parties, Picnics and Play and more. Swap them, share them and tell others you found these ways to green-up your end-of-summer and back-to-school activities from Clean Ocean Action.
Organize a school team to take part in the upcoming Fall Beach Sweeps, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22. Organizing a team is a great way to earn service hours. Teams can be any size and include community members and friends who are willing to spend a few hours making a difference. Registration details are on the website.
High school students are invited to apply for the Student Environmental Advocates and Leaders (SEAL) Program. This hands-on study program teaches students about current environmental threats as well as key advocacy techniques and tools that can make a difference today and in the future. SEAL students gain leadership skills, public speaking experience, a lasting respect for the environment and an understanding of civic activism. You can learn more at CleanOceanAction.org or by emailing email@example.com.
Finally, would you like to host a speaker in your classroom, community group or organization? COA representatives offer presentations for schools and organizations. If you would like to request one, simply fill out a presentation request form at CleanOceanAction.org.
